ZANE BARLAS SS17
With an Arabian twist and a Western flare, Zane Barlas totally stole the show. We sat down with the talented designer to talk inspiration, culture fusion, and mystery.
SKYN: Those looks behind the sand dunes, that was exquisite. What made you want to use the sand dunes as the backdrop for your collection?
ZB: The campaign started in the desert, we decided to shoot somewhere in the middle east, it just happened to be that way, it’s home for me. So we shot it there, and because of the middle eastern inspired looks that we decided to give, we wanted to make it a bit more royalty, but at the same time be able to mix it with the business casual looks, so that was the image that everyone decided was best.
SKYN: That’s so cool, because I think in today’s society that’s what you’re seeing a lot of, culture fusions, and that’s exactly what you did out there. Why do you think diversity in fashion is so important?
ZB: You have to know this. I ‘ve traveled to quite a few countries and I get inspired by what people wear. I travel back to my own country and there’s a different kind of fashion. It’s the same, but it’s different, just combining everything. It’s a great idea, and people love it. When people from back home come over here, they actually like what we wear, so it’s good.
SKYN: And I heard you recently partnered with a certain fashion editor, Danyl Geneciran, how was that?!
ZB: It was good, I actually flew him to Dubai with me and we shot the whole campaign and video that you saw. We shot that and he’s actually going to be giving us a spread in TOM* Magazine, so September 8th it’s going to be available at Chapters and Indigo. There will be an interview in there as well with me, so go check it out!
SKYN: Absolutely, we most certainly will. That’s exciting! We’ll definitely tell all our readers to go check it out. Ok, last one, why do you think a little mystery is so important to a man’s suit? Your whole collection was about that mysterious Arabian Western fusion, why do you think mystery?
ZB: Well I think mystery brings curiosity, and I think that’s very important because I think if you’re too open, that’s me, I like to make people curious about me rather than being too open. I’m a very reserved person, that’s just me, and I think all the designs represent me in a way.
SKYN: ...and they represent you so well. Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us!
